the non-negotiables

In the spirit of self-fulfillment, there are some qualities that one must have in order to into their best self. Boundaries are an important part of that journey. Here are some quick how being non-negotiable and creating boundaries can help you become your best self.

Grace is an amazing and powerful thing. We are innately flawed as humans, and we often make choices that are negatively impactful to ourselves and others. Often, we hear the phrase, “Forgive, don’t forget.” What happens when we forgive to the detriment of our self-integrity? Learning boundaries is to learn that not everyone should be afforded grace. Intentionality is an important tool in self-fulfillment, and others need to practice it just as much as you do. If people are not intentional about their choices and how they affect you, grace and forgiveness should not be automatically afforded to them. Being assertive about your boundaries is a sure fire way to honoring your best self.

Being assertive about your boundaries is no easy feat. We are often conditioned to have a permeable spirit, allowing things to happen to us and relinquishing our autonomy in the matter. We are taught that our intuition is delusioned and that relationships with other people are more important than the one we have with ourselves. How often do you let yourself down by continuing a situation that has more negative qualities than good? You cheat on yourself every time you choose a negative relationship over yourself. Create a red flag list, a deal-breaker pact to yourself to revoke access to those who do not respect or honor your boundaries. Those who love and respect you will not take your boundaries offensively. Those who love you want you to love yourself even more so.

Choosing yourself should not be a battle, but it is. In this world, we have been taught to choose others first and ourselves last. However, it is necessary to take a step back and reevaluate how you show up for yourself. By creating boundaries and become non-negotiable about them is the best way to be your own advocate and be your best self.
